Grading

Earning good grades in science class means demonstrating understanding of each science concept.  Students will demonstrate their understanding through a variety of projects, quizzes, tests, labs, notebooking, and products.

Although different graded items will require specialized rubrics, a generic rubric for the four levels of achievement would look like this.

4 - Advanced
3 - Proficient = "I get it!"
2 - Developing Understanding
1 - Beginning Understanding
0 - Is making no effort

In reality, what we are looking for is for all students to earn 3's on their work, that they can demonstrate proficiency in their understanding of the science concepts. In order to earn a 4, students will have to show that they can teach the concept to another student, or fulfill a similar project or product.

Students will also be receiving scores in a second category that covers the work habits, attendance, effort, engagement, homework, and responsibility.

The two most effective choices to earn good grades in science class are:
  1. Consistent Effort
  2. Regular Attendance
Aurora Public Schools (APS) is transitioning to a Standards-Based Grading System (SBG) August 2009. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns regarding SBG and you can find information at APS's website for SBG at http://www.aps.k12.co.us/family/grading/grading_faq.htm.
