Atoms and Matter: Benchmark 2.5

Today you are going to complete the following computer assignments to review and prepare for a short test tomorrow. Take out a piece of paper and put your name on it and the assignment name "Computer Lab 1.23.08."

All Matter is Made Up of Atoms. Benchmark 2.5.a

  1. Go to Explorelearning.com and use the Element Builder Gizmo to answer the multiple choice questions. Click the Check Your Answers button when you are sure they are all correct.
  2. Draw two diagrams of the two stable atoms of carbon

Different elements have different properties. Benchmark 2.5.b

  1. Go to this link if the one below does not work.
  2. Go to http://www.popsci.com/popsci/periodictable/ and compare the properties of 5 different elements. Make a table to record the properties and circle similarities between the elements.

Protons determine the element. Benchmark 2.5.c

  1. This one is a real challenge. Element Game. When you are done, raise your hand and show Mr. Whitney or Mr. Willson your score.

  1. Benchmark 2.5.a: Identify that all matter is made up of atoms and that atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons, and describe the location and charge of parts of the atom.
  2. Benchmark 2.5.b: Identify that a substance made up of only one type of atom is an element, an atom is the smallest unit of an element that still retains the properties of that element, and different elements have different properties.
  3. Benchmark 2.5.c: Explain that the number of protons in an atom determines what element it is.
