Period 3 Biology

Complete the lesson Who was Charles Darwin by mapping his voyage on the Beagle.

1. Use the world map (pdf) and excerpts from Darwin's The Voyage of the Beagle (pdf). Each journal excerpt describes a location and includes a date and a latitude and longitude listing.

2. Trace Darwin's voyage by reading the excerpts. You will find that the journal excerpts are not in chronological order. The Voyage of the Beagle is a collection of many of Darwin's journals, and he arranged the entries in this book by geographical area rather than by time. Make a list of the longitude and latitude listings in the correct time sequence. Number them and then place these numbers in the place on the map that corresponds to their longitude and latitude readings. If you have room, label each location on the map with the date he visited.

3. When you are finished, connect the excerpt locations with a line. Start in England in 1831 and follow Darwin's route until he arrived back in England in 1836.

4. When you are finished with your map, you should illustrate it. Draw small pictures to represent the observations Darwin made as he explored places along his route. If you don't have room on your map, you may want to draw the illustrations on an additional sheet of paper and number them to correspond to places on the map.

5. For extra credit, add other places mentioned in Darwin's journal excerpts and letters to make a more accurate path.

    Registering Students

    • Every student in the classroom should register and get an account, even if more than one student are sharing each computer. If several students are sharing a computer, you should take turns going through the registration process. You will have a chance to indicate that they are sharing a computer when they enter a WISE project.
    • To register, click http://wise.berkeley.edu/pages/newStudent.php.
    • You should enter:
      • your full name
      • the class period (usually a number)
      • a password (this will be entered twice to double-check)
      • a "Student Registration Code" - which is DKUF1K.
    • Note: You should be very careful to remember your username and password. Should you forget, do not re-register for WISE ask Mr.Whitney for help.

    Cell Biology

This week was all about the discovery of the cell, observing real cells, the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and the structure and function of cells.

To round out the week today complete the following:

    1. www.explorlearning.com, login and complete the gizmo called Cell Structure. Now that we have reviewed and explored cells, try the multiple choice problems beneath the gizmo and show Mr. Whitney your score.

    2. www.explorlearning.com, login and complete the gizmo called Paramecium Homeostasis. To truly understand how this gizmo works read the Student Exploration Guide.

    3. Any other cell questions? Check out this excellent cell biology website.

    4. Today was the first deadline for your science fair project. Review next weeks deadline and begin working on completing the items that are due. Click on the Science Fair link at the top of this site for a great resource to help you complete your experiment.

    Biology Classes

As we continue studying the chemistry of life it is important to understand the size and scale of the cell and atoms.

View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons.

    2. In your notes, Compare and Contrast the size of the leaf cell to the size of the atoms that make it up.

    3. Login to www.explorelearning.com using the new username and password Mr. Whitney will give you and choose from either Cell Structure, Element Builder, Ionic or Covalent Bonding Gizmos.

Be sure to follow the directions above each gizmo and answer the multiple choice questions when you are sure of the answers.

When you have checked your answers, check in with Mr. Whitney to show him your score.
